What is james long expedition?

James Long was a fur trader, explorer, and entrepreneur who led an expedition from the United States to northern Mexico in 1819. His mission was to establish a fur-trading post in the newly acquired Spanish territory of Texas and to form an independent state in northern Mexico.

Long and his party arrived in Texas in December 1819 and proclaimed the Republic of Texas. He was able to gather a small army of around 300 men and launched an attack on the Spanish army. However, his mission was ultimately unsuccessful, and he was captured and imprisoned by the Spanish in 1821.

Even though James Long's expedition failed, his efforts to establish an independent state in northern Mexico laid the groundwork for future revolutions in Texas. His actions also helped to bring Texas to the attention of the United States, which later annexed it in 1845.
